Golden Hawaii Barbershop is a classic barbershop located in the historic Kaimuki neighborhood serving Oahu's diverse, unique community with traditional haircuts & shaves while offering some of that good 'ol nostalgic feeling.
One of our favorite memories growing up in Hawaii was just cruising with friends and talking story, as we'd say here in Hawaii. Now our wish is to have Golden Hawaii Barbershop as the Gathering Place (nickname of Oahu) where you can HANG LOOSE in a comfortable space built by locals for locals, TALK STORY with neighborhood folks, and GET STYLED by some of the best barbers in North America. We are harkening back to a Golden time when neighbors looked out for one another and took pride in design details, from their ride to their hair.
We are steeped in traditional barbering methods and styles; so anything you want from years past, you can be sure we will achieve that period for you. We also stay current with most of the hair trends today and are able to continually progress the trade. Whether it's the hot towel shave you’ve always wanted, or that flattop, taper, or fade, we will strive to have you leave our shop looking exactly how you envisioned, if not better. Service will always be with a smile.
The barbershop itself is something we feel is unique to Hawaii, and beyond. Every piece of this barbershop's design reflects us authentically - no hired "designers," no staging props, no following trends. The spirit of our ohana, 1950s/1960s surf and car cultures, and our Hawaii skateboarding roots are manifested in our barbershop for that extra good vibe for the community. On the walls you will see everything from personal family photos shot in 1950s Hawaii to our record albums to artwork painted by friends. Friends born and raised on Oahu gave their time and skills to building the shop, like our real gold leaf window sign, showing genuine Aloha Spirit.
We are especially proud of our handcrafted Made-on-Oahu woodwork - from our barber stations to the wall panels to the front window counter - all custom built in Waimanalo by our friend who is considered to be the one of the best woodworkers in the Pacific Rim. We were lucky to have his unreal craftsmanship in our barbershop, no detail spared, like incorporating Japanese Tatami mats into our cash wrap.
Our red "Pizza Sign," as we call it, is original to our Kaimuki building (from the 1950s) and gifted to us by our building owner. We kept the original untouched on the back of the sign as the business remains today and are now our neighbors. We also felt giving the Hawaii community something unique was important: The ceiling lights we found at a salvage store, including our rare 100-years-old holophane lights. Our wallpaper was installed by one of the last elder locals on Oahu to still practice the craft. Our original 1950s Koken barber chairs are the most coveted in the barbering world. And don't forget to look up, even the ceilings are unique for Hawaii.
We will also sell small quantities of hand shaped Mid-century inspired custom surfboards by Eric Walden under the label Golden Hawaii Surf Designs. Eric is a local surfer, long-time surfboard shaper, and artist, who you may remember from Chinatown Boardroom, and notably a proud Kaimuki resident so you'll be seeing him in our barber chair.
So join us for da best haircuts eva and a free cold beer on us brahdahs. A comfortable gathering place for everyone. Shaka!
